Had a weird one this week.

SAS are installing a Grid environment at a customer site.

We had already installed the SAS 9.2 clients on a dedicated Citrix box, so the dev team could test the new SAS 9.2 clients / functionality.

We wanted to add a few clients, including the Enterprise Miner 6.2 client (we aren;t installing a websever so can’t use the web based java client).

So ran the install wizard, selected add additional software and then selected Enterprise Miner client. Install wizard went through ok and completed succesfully.

But there was no Enterprise Miner shortcut on the start menu, and if I clicked the em.exe I got nada.

After a bit of tooing and froing, the answer was to run the install wizard, do a planned deployment and only select the client tier and then Enterprise Miner.

Thing that is confusing is that Enterprise Guide, Management Console, DI Studio etc all installed ok via the add additional software option.

Just not Enterprise Miner (and no error messages of course).

I won’t rant about the fact that although a lot of the SAS products/client interfaces all finally share the same infrastructure components, user interfaces and functionality (im loving shared prompts), a number of them are stil orphans in this regard (why oh why doesnt EM use std metadata connection profiles like every other SAS client!)

But if you do find that you manually install Enterprise MIner client and it just doesn’t, try a planned deployment.

SAS are doing a Grid install on Linux at a customer site, interesting process to watch I must say.

One of issues they struck was when they tried to get Enterprise Guide 4.3 to run some code on the 9.2 Workspace server (pre Grid component install).

EG could see the metadata and data, it could bring both back to the project, but when you submitted some sas code (say via query Wizard, or list data) an error came up saying EG 4.3 needed SAS 9.2 and the server was the wrong version.

The fix was to reinstall the Intech Client on the PC and it all worked fine.

In the old days installing a client tool individually was easy, but in 9.2 you are encouraged to use the query wizard. As I wanted to only reinstall the IT Client I wanted to do it manually.

The It Client setup files were here:

$INSTALL DEPOT$\products\itclient__92230__win__xx__sp0__1

So if you need to install something manually (i.e EG) its in $INSTALL DEPOT$\products\

If you have the pleasure of installing SAS on a Windows server and then trying to uninstall and reinstall it multiple times, you will know that the uninstall process is time consuming and painful.

You have to go through the standard windows add/remove programs process for each SAS component/product, or restore a clean copy of the server image in the pre-install state.

(Now why would you do this multiple times you ask, well often becuase you have mucked up the install or you are trying to install a version of SAS that matches your client to test something for them or you)

SAS have issued a tech note that makes life so much easier:

Installation Note 39894: Using the SAS Uninstall Wizard to remove SAS® 9.2 from Microsoft Windows operating environments

The wizard assumes a raft of defaults that you will probably need to overide (i.e c:\) but provides parameter options to let you do this.

And of course if you are on Linux/Unix then there is no Windows registry to get in the way, so ignore the tool and just delete the files!

Saw a problem note about installing SAS Web OLAP Vewier over on the SAS Support site.

The interesting thing was the recommendation to create a SAS Software Depot (SSD) to do the install, rather than installing from CD.

I have to say that a software depot does make installs much easier (and quicker). Effectively when you create a Software Depot it copies all the install CD’s to a hard drive, in a format that you can install straight from the hard drive (and never have to put in a CD again

As part of the install from the Depot the install wizards ask what components you want installed, and you can point it at your setinit to only install what you are licensed for, magic!

Only downside is that the Software Depot often conatins all SAS products for all operating systems so can be very large. For example a full depot using a SAS internal setinit (i.e all products and all platforms) comes out at a whopping 35GB.
